Buko (Young Coconut)

Buko is the name for young coconuts. Although there are a near endless amount of ways to use a coconut in cooking, one of the best and simplest is to just slice it open and drink the water and eat the young coconut meat.

Expect to Pay: Around PHP 30 for one whole coconut and PHP 10-15 for condensed

Buko vendors will hack the coconut in front of you and serve it with a straw so you can drink it on the spot. If you don’t want a whole coconut, many vendors also offer buko juice made with condensed milk and strands of freshly grated coconut meat. We actually prefer the latter because it’s usually served chilled, but we find fresh buko juice to be refreshing even at room temperature.

At any market you go to, just look for a pile of coconuts, and you’re ready to drink some buko juice that will refresh you like nothing else can.
